UPS Batteries We Accept

We accept every type of UPS battery regardless of brand, size, condition, or chemistry. Dead, swollen, leaking, or still working — bring them all.

🔋

Sealed Lead-Acid (SLA/VRLA)

The most common type of UPS battery. These sealed lead-acid batteries are found in the vast majority of consumer and business UPS units. They contain lead plates and sulfuric acid electrolyte in a sealed case. We accept them in any condition, including swollen or leaking batteries. Lead is one of the most efficiently recycled materials, with recovery rates above 99%.

Lithium-Ion UPS Batteries

Newer UPS models from APC, Eaton, and Vertiv use lithium-ion battery technology for longer runtime, lighter weight, and extended lifespan. These batteries require specialized recycling to safely recover lithium, cobalt, and other valuable materials. We accept lithium-ion UPS batteries of all sizes and handle them through certified downstream processors.

📦

Battery Cartridges & Packs

Pre-assembled replacement battery cartridges (like APC RBC series) and multi-cell battery packs can be dropped off as-is. You do not need to disassemble battery cartridges or separate individual cells. Bring the entire cartridge or pack and we handle the rest.

Why UPS Batteries Cannot Go in the Trash

UPS batteries are classified as hazardous waste under federal and Missouri state regulations. Proper recycling is not optional — it is a legal requirement.

☢️

Lead & Acid Content

Sealed lead-acid UPS batteries contain lead plates and sulfuric acid. Lead is a toxic heavy metal that contaminates soil and groundwater when sent to landfills. The EPA classifies lead-acid batteries as hazardous waste under RCRA, and Missouri regulations mirror these federal requirements. Businesses that dispose of lead-acid batteries in regular trash face potential fines and liability.

🔥

Lithium Fire Risk

Lithium-ion UPS batteries pose serious fire risks when damaged or improperly disposed of. A punctured or crushed lithium-ion battery can experience thermal runaway, producing intense fires that are difficult to extinguish. Waste facilities across the country have reported fires caused by lithium batteries mixed into regular waste streams. Proper recycling eliminates this risk.

♻️

Valuable Materials

UPS batteries contain highly recyclable materials. Lead from SLA batteries is recovered at rates above 99% and used to manufacture new batteries. Lithium-ion batteries yield cobalt, nickel, lithium, and copper. Recycling these materials reduces mining demand and keeps hazardous substances out of the environment. This is why we accept UPS batteries for free.

How to Safely Transport UPS Batteries

Transporting UPS batteries to our facility is straightforward, but a few precautions keep everyone safe. Sealed lead-acid batteries are generally stable, but leaking or swollen batteries require extra care. Lithium-ion batteries should be handled with more caution due to fire risk if damaged.

For sealed lead-acid batteries: Place batteries upright in a sturdy box or plastic bin. If a battery appears swollen or is leaking, double-bag it in heavy plastic bags and keep it upright. Transport in your vehicle's trunk or truck bed, not in the passenger compartment. Do not stack heavy items on top of batteries.

For lithium-ion batteries: Keep batteries away from metal objects, keys, or coins that could short-circuit the terminals. If the battery is visibly damaged, swollen, or has a strong chemical odor, place it in a non-conductive container and transport it away from flammable materials. If you have concerns about a damaged lithium battery, call us at (816) 295-2334 and we can arrange pickup.

For complete UPS units: You can bring the entire UPS unit with batteries installed. No need to remove batteries yourself. For heavy rack-mount units, we recommend using a hand truck or dolly, or simply Schedule a Pickup (3+ gaylords) and we will load them for you.

UPS Battery Recycling FAQ

Is UPS battery recycling free at Computer Recycling LLC?

Yes. UPS battery recycling is completely free. Drop off UPS batteries and UPS units at our North Kansas City facility during business hours at no charge. For businesses with large quantities of UPS equipment, we offer free pickup service for qualifying volumes. Call (816) 295-2334 to arrange collection.

What types of UPS batteries do you accept?

We accept all UPS battery types including sealed lead-acid (SLA/VRLA), lithium-ion, and nickel-cadmium batteries from any manufacturer. This covers replacement battery cartridges, individual cells, and batteries still installed inside UPS units. We accept batteries from APC, CyberPower, Eaton, Tripp Lite, Vertiv/Liebert, and all other brands.

Can I drop off the entire UPS unit, not just the battery?

Yes. We accept complete UPS units with batteries installed. You do not need to remove the batteries yourself. We also accept UPS units with dead or missing batteries. Bring the entire unit and we handle the disassembly, battery removal, and recycling of all components.

Why can't UPS batteries go in the regular trash?

Most UPS batteries are sealed lead-acid batteries containing lead and sulfuric acid, both classified as hazardous materials under EPA regulations. Disposing of them in regular trash violates federal and state hazardous waste laws and can contaminate soil and groundwater. Lithium-ion UPS batteries pose fire risks in waste streams. Proper recycling ensures these materials are safely recovered. See our battery recycling page for more details.
