Do you accept smart thermostats for recycling?
Yes — we take smart thermostats free, working or broken, any brand and any age. Bring them to Computer Recycling LLC at 125 E 10th Ave, North Kansas City, MO 64116. No appointment, no minimum quantity, no fee. We are open Monday to Friday 8am–3pm and Saturday 8am–2pm. Pull around to the back dock, ring the bell, and our crew comes out to unload for you — most drop-offs take under five minutes. Nothing is landfilled: working gear is refurbished for reuse and the rest is broken down for material recovery through R2v3 or e-Stewards certified partners. Larger volumes can be picked up instead.

What We Accept
We accept all thermostats: Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell, Emerson Sensi, programmable digital thermostats, and older mercury-containing thermostats. Smart home hubs, sensors, and related accessories welcome too.
Why Recycling Matters
Older thermostats often contain mercury — one of the most toxic substances in household electronics. Even a single mercury thermostat contains enough mercury to contaminate a small lake. Smart thermostats contain lithium batteries, WiFi radios with rare earth components, and circuit boards. Professional recycling safely captures mercury and recovers electronic materials.
Buyback & Value Recovery
Current-generation Nest and Ecobee thermostats in working condition (especially Nest Learning Thermostat and Ecobee Premium) can have resale value. Bulk quantities from HVAC contractors or property management companies should contact us.

Schedule a Pickup (3+ gaylords) →Mercury Thermostat Safety and Handling
If you are replacing an older thermostat, there is a good chance it contains a small glass ampule filled with liquid mercury that acts as a temperature-sensitive switch. Mercury is a potent neurotoxin, so handle these units carefully — keep them upright and avoid dropping or shaking them. Place the thermostat in a sealed plastic bag for transport in case the glass ampule is cracked. Do not put mercury thermostats in the regular trash or curbside recycling bin, as many waste haulers will reject them and they pose a serious contamination risk at sorting facilities. HVAC contractors performing upgrades across multiple homes or commercial buildings can accumulate mercury thermostats and drop off entire batches at once. Smart thermostats like Nest and Ecobee do not contain mercury but should still be recycled to recover their lithium batteries and electronic components.
