Do you accept smart home devices for recycling?

Yes — we take smart home devices free, working or broken, any brand and any age. Bring them to Computer Recycling LLC at 125 E 10th Ave, North Kansas City, MO 64116. No appointment, no minimum quantity, no fee. We are open Monday to Friday 8am–3pm and Saturday 8am–2pm. Pull around to the back dock, ring the bell, and our crew comes out to unload for you — most drop-offs take under five minutes. Nothing is landfilled: working gear is refurbished for reuse and the rest is broken down for material recovery through R2v3 or e-Stewards certified partners. Larger volumes can be picked up instead.

What We Accept

We accept all smart home devices: Amazon Echo/Alexa, Google Nest/Home, Apple HomePod, Ring doorbells and cameras, Nest thermostats and smoke detectors, smart plugs, smart bulbs, Philips Hue, and any other IoT devices.

Why Recycling Matters

Smart home devices contain lithium batteries, circuit boards with precious metals, microphones, cameras, and wireless radios with rare earth components. As the IoT market explodes, e-waste from smart devices is one of the fastest-growing waste categories. Proper recycling prevents these small but toxic devices from accumulating in landfills.

Buyback & Value Recovery

Current-generation smart home devices in working condition — especially Ring, Nest, and Apple HomePod — may have resale value. Contact us if you have quantities from property management or commercial installations.

Deregister Your Devices Before Recycling

Smart home devices are tied to your personal accounts and home network, so removing them properly protects your privacy. For Amazon Echo and Alexa devices, deregister them through the Alexa app or on your Amazon account page. Google Nest and Home devices should be factory reset by holding the microphone-mute button for about 15 seconds. Ring doorbells and cameras need to be removed from your Ring account before drop-off, or the next owner cannot activate them. Apple HomePod should be reset through the Home app or by touching the top and holding until the spinning light appears. Smart plugs, light bulbs, and sensors can usually be reset with a series of on-off power cycles described in their manual. If you skip these steps, no worries — we wipe all devices during processing, but deregistering first ensures your accounts are immediately secure.

Common questions

Can I recycle smart home devices for free in Kansas City?

+

Yes. Computer Recycling LLC accepts all smart home devices for free recycling — Amazon Echo, Google Home, Ring doorbells, smart plugs, smart thermostats, smart locks, and more. Free drop-off at 125 E 10th Ave, North Kansas City.

Should I factory reset my smart home device before recycling?

+

Yes, we strongly recommend performing a factory reset and removing the device from your smart home app (Alexa, Google Home, Ring, etc.) before recycling. This removes your Wi-Fi credentials, account links, and personal data. If you need help, our team can assist with secure data wiping.

Do you accept smart thermostats like Nest and Ecobee?

+

Yes. We accept all smart thermostats including Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell, and others. Working smart thermostats may qualify for buyback. Drop off for free, no appointment needed.

What happens to recycled smart home devices?

+

Smart home devices are tested for refurbishment potential. Working units with market value may be resold. Non-working units are disassembled and their components — circuit boards, plastics, metals, and batteries — are separated and sent to specialized recycling streams.
