Why Copier Recycling Matters More Than You Think
Most people do not realize that their office copier stores a complete copy of every document it has ever processed. That makes proper disposal a data security issue, not just a waste management issue.
Copiers Have Hard Drives
Nearly every modern copier manufactured after 2002 contains an internal hard drive. This drive stores digital images of every document copied, scanned, printed, and faxed through the machine. For a busy office, that can mean tens of thousands of document images including contracts, financial statements, employee records, medical files, and customer data. When you retire a copier without destroying the hard drive, all of that data goes with it.
Compliance Requires Proper Disposal
If your business handles protected health information (HIPAA), payment card data (PCI-DSS), student records (FERPA), or financial data (SOX), the hard drive inside your copier falls under the same data protection requirements as your computers and servers. Simply returning a copier to a leasing company or selling it without destroying the drive can result in a compliance violation and potential data breach.

Data Destruction for Copier Hard Drives
Every copier we recycle goes through our data destruction process. Here is exactly what happens to the hard drive inside your copier.
Hard Drive Identification
Our technicians open the copier and locate the internal hard drive. Most copiers have one hard drive, but some high-volume production models have two or more. Every drive is removed and logged by serial number, brand, model, and capacity.
Physical Destruction or NIST 800-88 Wiping
Copier hard drives are physically destroyed through shredding or drilling, or wiped using NIST 800-88 compliant methods. Physical destruction is the default method and the most secure option. The drive platters are rendered completely unreadable and unrecoverable.
Certificate of Destruction
You receive a serialized Certificate of Destruction that documents each drive by serial number, destruction method, date, and technician. This certificate satisfies audit requirements for HIPAA, PCI-DSS, SOX, FERPA, and state data breach regulations. Certificates are delivered via email, typically within 1-3 business days.
Recycling a Large or Floor-Standing Copier
Floor-standing copiers can weigh 200 to 500 pounds, so bring a few hands or a vehicle that can handle the weight. We do not pick up a copier on its own — but if you are also retiring a qualifying IT load, your copier can come with it.
Free Drop-Off, Any Size
Bring your copier to our North Kansas City facility during business hours and we will help you unload it. No charge, no appointment, and no size limit on drop-off — floor-standing production units included. We take the toner cartridges, paper trays, and accessories too.
Pickup Only With a Qualifying IT Load
We do not provide pickup for a printer or copier by itself. Pickup is reserved for businesses retiring a qualifying IT load — laptops, desktops, servers, networking equipment, or large amounts of wire (about 3+ gaylord boxes). If you have a load like that, we are glad to take your copier along with it. Schedule a Pickup (3+ gaylords) or call to discuss your volume.
Have just a copier or a small load? Drop off free at our facility: 125 E 10th Ave, North Kansas City, MO 64116. Open Monday–Friday 8am–3pm, Saturday 8am–2pm.
How We Recycle Your Copier
Once your copier arrives at our North Kansas City facility, it goes through a thorough disassembly and recycling process. Nothing goes to landfill.
Intake & Audit
The copier is logged by brand, model, and serial number. Data-bearing components are identified and flagged for destruction.
Data Destruction
All internal hard drives are removed and destroyed through physical shredding or drilling. Serial numbers are matched to destruction records.
Disassembly
The copier is broken down into component materials: steel, aluminum, copper, plastic, circuit boards, glass, and rubber. Toner is handled separately as hazardous material.
Material Recovery
Separated materials are sent to certified downstream processors for recycling. Metals re-enter the manufacturing supply chain. Nothing goes to landfill.

Copier Recycling FAQ
Do copiers contain hard drives?
Yes. Most modern copiers manufactured after 2002 contain internal hard drives that store digital images of every document copied, scanned, printed, or faxed. A busy office copier can accumulate thousands of stored document images over its lifetime. When you recycle a copier with Computer Recycling LLC, we destroy the hard drive and provide a Certificate of Destruction.
How much does copier recycling cost in Kansas City?
Copier recycling is completely free at Computer Recycling LLC. There is no charge for drop-off, recycling, or data destruction. For a single copier, drop-off is the way to go. We provide pickup only when you are also retiring a qualifying IT load — laptops, desktops, servers, networking equipment, or large amounts of wire. Call (816) 295-2334 to discuss.
What brands of copiers do you accept?
We accept all brands: Canon, Ricoh, Xerox, HP, Brother, Konica Minolta, Sharp, Toshiba, Kyocera, Epson, Lexmark, Samsung, and every other manufacturer. We also accept multifunction printers, standalone scanners, fax machines, and all associated toner cartridges and supplies.
Can you pick up a large copier from my office?
Not for a copier on its own. A single copier is free to drop off at our facility, and we help you unload. We provide pickup only when you are also retiring a qualifying IT load — laptops, desktops, servers, networking equipment, or large amounts of wire (about 3+ gaylord boxes). If you have a load like that, we are glad to take your copier with it. Schedule online or call to discuss.
Do you provide a Certificate of Destruction for copier hard drives?
Yes. Every copier hard drive we destroy is documented with a serialized Certificate of Destruction that includes the drive serial number, destruction method, date, and technician. This documentation satisfies HIPAA, PCI-DSS, SOX, FERPA, and state data breach compliance requirements. Certificates are delivered via email within 1-3 business days.
