If you have an old television sitting in your garage, basement, or closet, you are not alone. Millions of TVs are replaced every year as people upgrade to newer models. The problem is that you cannot simply throw a TV in the trash. Televisions contain hazardous materials like lead, mercury, and cadmium that are harmful to the environment when they end up in a landfill. In Kansas City, proper TV recycling is both easy and free when you know where to go.

Why You Cannot Throw a TV in the Trash

Televisions are classified as electronic waste, and most municipal waste services in the Kansas City metro area will not accept them with regular trash or bulk pickup. Older TVs in particular contain toxic substances sealed inside the screen and circuit boards. When these materials break down in a landfill, they can leach into soil and groundwater, creating serious environmental and public health risks.

Missouri does not currently have a statewide e-waste recycling law, which means proper TV disposal falls on the individual. Fortunately, responsible recycling options are available in the Kansas City area at no cost to you.

No appointment is necessary — just drive up and our team will help you unload.

We are conveniently located just north of downtown Kansas City, easily accessible from I-35, I-29, and I-70. Whether you are coming from Overland Park, Olathe, Lee's Summit, Independence, Liberty, or anywhere else in the KC metro, we are a short drive away.

What Types of TVs Are Accepted

We accept most modern flat-screen televisions for free recycling:

  • LCD TVs — all brands and sizes
  • LED TVs — all brands and sizes
  • OLED TVs — all brands and sizes
  • Smart TVs — Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio, TCL, Hisense, and more
  • Computer monitors — flat-screen LCD and LED monitors

TVs We Do Not Accept

CRT (tube) TVs and plasma TVs are not accepted. These older television types contain high levels of lead and other hazardous materials that require specialized processing. If you have a CRT or tube TV that needs recycling, check with your local household hazardous waste facility or contact the Kansas City area recycling hotline for current options.

What Happens to Your Recycled TV

When your television arrives at our facility, it goes through a responsible recycling process. Flat-screen TVs are carefully disassembled, and the components are sorted by material type. Metals, plastics, circuit boards, and glass are each sent to specialized downstream processors where they are recovered and reused in new products. Nothing goes to a landfill. We are committed to zero-landfill electronics recycling, and we maintain full compliance with all EPA and state environmental regulations.

Tips Before You Drop Off Your TV

  • Remove any connected devices — Unplug streaming sticks, game consoles, or cable boxes before bringing your TV in.
  • Factory reset smart TVs — If your TV has apps with logged-in accounts (Netflix, Hulu, YouTube), perform a factory reset to log out of all services.
  • No need to keep the remote, cables, or stand — We accept the TV as-is, but you are welcome to bring accessories along for recycling too.
  • Broken TVs are fine — Cracked screens, non-working TVs, and water-damaged units are all accepted.
