Chromebook & Laptop Recycling Programs

Most Kansas City schools now run 1:1 Chromebook programs, which means thousands of devices cycling through every 3-5 years. We support the full device lifecycle: your IT team deploys devices, uses them through their AUE (Auto Update Expiration) date, and when they reach end-of-life we handle the rest. Our process includes bulk intake with barcode and asset tag scanning, FERPA-compliant data sanitization, component recovery, and responsible recycling. We routinely process shipments of 500 to 5,000+ laptops and Chromebooks from a single district. Devices with remaining market value — like Chromebooks still within their AUE window — may qualify for buyback, putting money back into your technology budget.

🚛

Scheduled Pickups for Schools

We bring the truck to you — no need to transport pallets of old equipment across town. Here's how it works: your IT coordinator requests a pickup, we confirm a date and time that fits your schedule, our team arrives with all necessary equipment to load and transport devices, and you receive documentation within days. Most districts schedule their major retirements around summer break when buildings are accessible and less disruption occurs. We recommend booking summer cleanout pickups by mid-May, as June through August is our busiest season for school programs. We also handle mid-year pickups for broken devices, lab upgrades, or building closures.

FERPA-Compliant Data Wiping for Student Devices

Under FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), schools are responsible for protecting student education records — and that responsibility extends to disposing of devices that stored or accessed those records. Even cloud-based Chromebooks cache student data locally: browsing history, downloaded files, saved credentials, and cached documents. Our data destruction process follows NIST 800-88 guidelines. Every device undergoes verified sanitization, and drives that cannot be wiped are physically destroyed. You receive a Certificate of Destruction that documents every serial number processed — the kind of record that satisfies district auditors and protects your administration.

📋

Asset Tracking & Certificates for District Auditors

School districts maintain detailed asset databases, and auditors expect a clear chain of custody when equipment is disposed of. We provide serialized reports that list every device by make, model, serial number, and asset tag. These reports reconcile directly with your district asset management system — whether you use Incident IQ, AssetTiger, Google Admin, or spreadsheets. Our Certificates of Destruction document the date, method, and verification of data sanitization for each device. Districts retain these records to demonstrate compliance during internal audits, state audits, and E-Rate documentation reviews.

🏫

What School Equipment We Accept

We accept virtually every type of electronics found in K-12 schools: Chromebooks (all brands — Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Samsung, ASUS), laptops and desktops, tablets and iPads, projectors (ceiling-mounted and portable), interactive whiteboards and displays (SMART Boards, Promethean), document cameras, printers and copiers, networking equipment (access points, switches, routers, cabling), servers, AV equipment, phone systems, PA system electronics, and science lab instruments with electronic components. If it plugs in or has a battery, we can recycle it. Not sure about a specific item? Just ask.

Frequently Asked Questions — School Recycling

Is there a minimum number of devices for a school pickup?

We typically schedule free pickups for schools with 3 or more pallets or gaylord boxes of equipment. For smaller quantities, drop-off at our North Kansas City facility is always free. Contact us and we can usually work something out regardless of volume.

Can you schedule pickups during summer break?

Absolutely. Summer is our busiest season for school pickups. Many districts schedule their annual cleanouts between June and August when buildings are less occupied. We recommend booking summer pickups by mid-May to secure your preferred dates.

Do Chromebooks contain student data that needs to be wiped?

Yes. Even though Chromebooks are cloud-based, local storage can contain cached files, browsing data, saved passwords, and downloaded documents with student information. FERPA requires that any device used to access student records be properly sanitized before disposal. We wipe every device to NIST 800-88 standards.

Is school electronics recycling really free?

Yes. Recycling is completely free for all Kansas City area schools and districts. There is no charge for pickup, processing, or recycling. Data destruction services are available at low cost, and qualifying devices like newer Chromebooks may generate buyback revenue for your district.

What about Chromebooks still enrolled in our Google Admin console?

We recommend deprovisioning Chromebooks from your Google Admin console before recycling. This releases the Chrome Enterprise license back to your district so it can be reassigned to new devices. If you need guidance on bulk deprovisioning, our team can walk you through the process.
